Ekiti Police Break Silence on Sowore Alleged Kidnap

By George Omagbemi

The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed reports that African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was kidnapped by armed men in Ado-Ekiti, confirming that he was rescued by police officers and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The police said Sowore sustained an injury during an incident at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of the state capital on Friday, October 30.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, explained that officers were alerted to an altercation involving Sowore and some individuals at the restaurant. Police operatives reportedly responded promptly and rescued him from the scene.

According to the command, Sowore was receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.

The Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those involved and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted.

However, Sowore has disputed the police account, insisting that he and members of his team were attacked rather than involved in an ordinary altercation.

The AAC candidate also alleged that the attackers were government-sponsored and accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of providing them with his team’s location. Those allegations have not been independently established.

The incident sparked concern after a message posted on Sowore’s social media account initially claimed that he had been kidnapped and his whereabouts were unknown.

Sowore was reportedly in Ekiti State to participate in the 2026 Ikogosi 17.5-kilometre marathon scheduled for Saturday, October 31.

The police have urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue, saying the inquiry will determine what happened and identify those responsible.
