Fresh political tension is emerging in Kwara State following the decision of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s cousin, AbdulRahman Giwa, to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and pursue the governorship race ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development became public on May 8, 2026, intensifying speculation over widening cracks within the ruling APC in Kwara State. Giwa’s emergence under the NDC platform has generated discussions across political circles, especially as succession calculations continue ahead of Governor AbdulRazaq’s exit in 2027.
Reports indicate that the NDC recently held a congress in Ilorin where state executives were inaugurated as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s structure in Kwara.
Giwa’s entry into the opposition platform reportedly coincided with increasing national attention on the NDC following the alignment of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso with the party.
The controversy deepened after campaign posters promoting Giwa’s governorship ambition surfaced online, allegedly circulated by a serving aide within the Kwara State Government.
The development has fuelled speculation about possible internal divisions and underground political realignments within the APC ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
