Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has apologised to Nigerians after facing criticism over his comment that the country is safer now than it was 10 years ago. His statement, which was made during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, sparked strong reactions from many citizens who felt his remarks ignored the realities of insecurity.
In an apology video released to the public, the comedian admitted that his statement was insensitive, especially to people who have lost loved ones or suffered from kidnappings and violence. He said he understands why many Nigerians were hurt by his comment and expressed regret over the pain his words may have caused.
Seyi Law explained that he did not intend to dismiss the suffering of victims but acknowledged that his statement came across in a negative way. He said he is not too proud to apologise when he makes mistakes and stressed that he believes in correcting himself publicly whenever he is wrong.
He also referred to a previous incident on the same podcast where he mistakenly mentioned the political party of Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, and immediately apologised after realising the error. According to him, this shows his willingness to accept responsibility and make corrections when necessary.
The comedian concluded by offering a sincere apology to Nigerians and promised to continue speaking with leaders and stakeholders about improving security in Nigeria. He said he remains committed to using his platform responsibly and regrets any offence caused by his earlier remarks.
