The Independent National Electoral Commission has released a revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections following the introduction of the new Electoral Act, 2026. The commission said the changes were made to ensure full compliance with the new law guiding electoral activities across the country.
INEC announced that the presidential and national assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, January 16, 2027, instead of the earlier date of February 20, 2027. The governorship and state houses of assembly elections have also been fixed for Saturday, February 6, 2027, instead of the previously scheduled March 6, 2027.
The commission said party primaries, including the resolution of disputes, will begin on April 23, 2026, and end on May 30, 2026. Campaigns for presidential and national assembly elections will commence on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for governorship and state assembly elections will begin on September 9, 2026. INEC reminded political parties that campaigns must end 24 hours before election day as required by law.
INEC also rescheduled the governorship election in Osun State from August 8, 2026, to August 15, 2026. The commission noted that some activities for the governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti State had already been conducted, but the remaining processes will follow the new timetable in line with the Electoral Act, 2026.
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the revised timetable is consistent with the Constitution and electoral law. He called on political parties, stakeholders, and citizens across Nigeria to cooperate with the commission to ensure peaceful, credible, and transparent elections.
