The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Barrister Venatius Ikem, has resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing internal divisions, a crisis of direction and leadership challenges within the party.
Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja and the state secretary in Calabar.
In the letter, the former chairman said his decision followed careful reflection on the party’s internal affairs and his conviction that he could no longer effectively discharge his responsibilities under the prevailing circumstances.
He expressed concern that internal dynamics and divergent positions among party stakeholders were weakening the PDP’s cohesion and undermining its ability to pursue a united political course.
“As we enter a critical electoral season, I have found it increasingly difficult to reconcile my responsibilities as State Chairman with the prevailing internal dynamics and divergent positions that continue to weaken the party’s ability to pursue a clear and united course,” he stated.
Ikem described the situation as a crisis of direction and leadership coherence, warning that the challenges could undermine the sacrifices, investments and aspirations of loyal party members if left unresolved.
Despite his concerns, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served as the party’s state chairman for five years.
He acknowledged the contributions of party leaders, members and supporters who stood by him throughout his tenure, particularly Senator (Prof.) Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, whom he credited with providing encouragement and support during difficult moments in his political journey.
The former chairman also acknowledged the contributions of Chief Nyesom Wike, whom he described as the party’s national leader, saying his role in their collective political efforts remained significant.
Ikem extended his appreciation to supporters across Cross River State, particularly the people of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty and commitment over the years.
Explaining his decision to step aside, he said he had reached a point where reassessment, a clearer vision and a new pathway were necessary for his political future.
“Life and leadership often require periods of reassessment and renewal,” he said, stressing the need for future decisions to be guided by purpose, clarity and a commitment to advancing the interests of the people.
He, however, reaffirmed his commitment to the progress, stability and development of Cross River State and Nigeria, while wishing the PDP success in its future endeavours.
Meanwhile, an accompanying social media post claimed that Ikem had also left the PDP, although his resignation letter specifically announced his departure from the position of state chairman and did not explicitly state that he had resigned from the party.
His next political destination remains unknown, as he has yet to announce any decision to join another political party.
