Botswana Appoints Omoboriowo as Vice Chairman of Power Corporation to Drive Energy Reform

By George Omagbemi Sylvester

Nigerian energy expert Akinwole II Omoboriowo has been appointed Vice Chairman of the Botswana Power Corporation Board of Directors, marking a strategic move by President Advocate Duma Boko to fortify leadership in the Southern African nation’s critical power sector. The announcement, made on 3 March 2026, positions Omoboriowo at the heart of efforts to tackle persistent electricity supply challenges, expand renewable energy capacity, and help Botswana transition toward becoming a net exporter of clean energy. The appointment reflects Botswana’s intent to harness deep technical experience to address longstanding grid reliability issues and support broader economic growth ambitions.

Omoboriowo, who also serves as Chairman and CEO of GENESIS Energy Group with more than two decades of continental experience in utility-scale power generation and energy finance, brings a track record of leading major projects across Africa and beyond. His new role aligns with Botswana’s ongoing Maduo 26 transformation strategy — a five-year agenda aimed at improving operational efficiency, strengthening financial performance, and enhancing governance at the power utility. Government officials say his leadership is expected to accelerate infrastructure development, bolster investor confidence, and expand Botswana’s influence in the regional electricity market.
