The African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) have both condemned recent military strikes carried out by the United States in coordination with Israeli forces against targets inside the Islamic Republic of Iran, calling the actions dangerous and urging an immediate halt to further escalation of hostilities that threaten global peace and security.
AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed deep concern over the attacks, which have sharply escalated tensions in the Middle East, and warned that continued military action could worsen instability, disrupt energy markets and imperil food security. He stressed that all parties must act in line with international law and the United Nations Charter, and prioritise restraint, urgent de-escalation and sustained diplomatic dialogue to avert a broader crisis.
Similarly, senior EU officials including European Council President António Costa and European Commission leaders described the unfolding conflict as “greatly concerning”, emphasising the need to protect civilians, adhere to international law, and bolster diplomatic efforts. The EU reiterated its commitment to regional stability and non-proliferation, urging all sides to exercise maximum restraint.
These statements come amid heightened regional violence following the US-Israeli operation and Iran’s retaliatory strikes, raising fears of a wider conflagration that global powers are now pushing to contain.
