The Nigerian Army has dismissed as false and misleading a viral report alleging that a senior military officer was recently killed and his wife abducted near Abuja.
Army authorities clarified that the incident being circulated on social media actually occurred in July 2021 and involved the late Major General Hassan Ahmed along the Abuja–Lokoja Road.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Army accused mischief makers of recycling old reports to create fear, panic, and confusion among Nigerians.
The military stressed that the original attack happened on July 15, 2021, when gunmen attacked the senior officer while he was travelling near Abuja. Investigations at the time reportedly led to arrests and prosecution of suspects connected to the incident.
The Army urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information, especially on social media platforms where outdated reports are often republished as current events.
Authorities also reaffirmed the military’s commitment to national security and ongoing operations against terrorism, banditry, and violent criminal groups across Nigeria.
