Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed Cristian Romero as the next captain of the national team after Lionel Messi’s international retirement.
The 28-year-old defender will inherit the captain’s armband once Messi plays his final match for Argentina.
Scaloni announced the decision ahead of the team’s upcoming friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin.
Romero, who is widely known as Cuti, has already been part of Argentina’s leadership group and was previously behind Messi and Nicolás Otamendi in the captaincy hierarchy.
“The captain is going to be Cuti,” Scaloni said.
“He was already the third captain after Leo and Ota (Nicolas Otamendi). There is Emiliano (Martinez), who can also wear the armband.
“Rodrigo (De Paul), who will not be in these two games, can also wear it. Lautaro (Martinez) can wear it. Cuti is the right one.”
