The Osun State Government has faulted the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for excluding the state from its recent commendation of governments implementing the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.
The state government said it had already implemented the agreement at the Osun State University (UNIOSUN) and commenced payment of the applicable arrears.
The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, stated this in Osogbo on Saturday while reacting to ASUU’s position.
ASUU’s National Executive Council had, after an emergency meeting in Abuja on September 5, 2026, commended some state governments for beginning implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.
However, Osun was reportedly not included among the states acknowledged by the union.
Alimi said the omission was surprising, stressing that Governor Ademola Adeleke was the second governor to approve the applicable salary adjustment after the Ekiti State governor.
He said, “For the avoidance of doubt, the Osun State Government has implemented the Federal Government/ASUU agreement at Osun State University, even before the Federal Government and has also commenced payment of the applicable arrears.
“It is on record that Governor Ademola Adeleke is the second to approve the salary, after Ekiti State. The omission of Osun State from ASUU’s commendation of states that have commenced implementation is therefore surprising and inexplicable.
“The Osun State government considers this commission as mischief. Our commitment to staff welfare is unparalleled and the records in our University speak to this claim.”
The state government also rejected any suggestion that it had failed to meet its obligations under the agreement or shown indifference towards the welfare of academic staff.
“The Osun State government therefore rejects any insinuation that it has been indifferent to the welfare of academic staff or that it has failed to honour its obligations under the agreement.”
The government further disputed claims surrounding the extension of the tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN.
It rejected the suggestion that the decision was an arbitrary executive action intended to circumvent the law, maintaining its position on the university’s governance and administration.
