President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has sought to calm anxious lawmakers following a series of upsets in recent party primaries, hinting that efforts are underway to ensure that most serving senators secure favourable political outcomes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing senators at the resumption of plenary after a three-week recess and the Eid-el-Kabir break, Akpabio acknowledged that political contests naturally produce both winners and losers. However, he assured his colleagues that the Senate leadership was working diligently to ensure that there would be “very few disappointments” among serving lawmakers.
His remarks came against the backdrop of contentious party primaries that saw several senators lose nomination tickets, while others became embroiled in disputes over the conduct and outcome of the exercises.
The Senate President’s comments have fueled speculation about possible reconciliation efforts, political negotiations, appointments, substitutions, or other arrangements aimed at accommodating affected lawmakers.
Observers believe the statement was carefully crafted to reassure senators facing uncertain political futures and to discourage potential defections to rival parties.
