Nigeria has recorded a significant diplomatic achievement as Jimoh Ibrahim, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, was elected Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly Fifth Committee, the body responsible for budgetary and administrative affairs of the global organization.
The election was conducted by acclamation at the UN Headquarters in New York on 2 June 2026 at the UN Headquarters in New York. Following the election, Ibrahim confirmed in his acceptance remarks that he had been elected “today, 2nd June 2026.”
The Fifth Committee is one of the most influential committees within the United Nations system, overseeing issues related to the UN budget, administration, human resources, and financial management involving all 193 member states.
In his acceptance remarks, Ibrahim described the appointment as a great honor and pledged to work with member states to address the organization’s financial and administrative challenges. He noted that the United Nations is currently facing significant fiscal pressures, including a budget shortfall exceeding $1.8 billion, making prudent financial management more critical than ever.
Ibrahim, a former Nigerian senator and businessman, said he would draw upon his legislative and international experience to build consensus among member states and strengthen the committee’s effectiveness.
The appointment has been widely welcomed in diplomatic circles and is being viewed as a testament to Nigeria’s growing influence within multilateral institutions. Analysts say the development further strengthens Nigeria’s voice in global governance and international decision-making processes.
