Senior Advocate of Nigeria and political activist, Kunle Adegoke, has urged Nigerians to look beyond campaign promises and examine the records and antecedents of political candidates before voting in the 2027 general elections.
Adegoke said a candidate’s past conduct, capacity and record of public service could provide a better indication of their character and ability to govern than promises made during election campaigns.
He spoke on Thursday during interview.
Responding to concerns over politicians who allegedly abandon campaign promises after assuming office, the SAN said voters must also accept responsibility for the choices they make at the polls.
“It is you people that have been making mistakes. What is the antecedent of the people that have been soft-soaping you, that have been soft-talking you? What is their antecedent?” he asked.
Adegoke, who is seeking to represent Osun Central Senatorial District, also defended his previous legal representation of the All Progressives Congress, saying his role as a lawyer should not be confused with political allegiance.
“I’m a lawyer by profession. It is whoever engages me that I will represent,” he said.
He also addressed the political understanding between the Accord Party and the APC at the presidential level, arguing that such an arrangement should not prevent voters from making independent choices in governorship and legislative elections.
According to him, voters are not required to support the same party across all elections and should instead consider the candidates and issues involved.
On his senatorial ambition, Adegoke said his priorities would include effective representation, legislative oversight, scrutiny of government budgets and constituency development.
He promised to pursue projects across the 10 local government areas of Osun Central based on the specific needs of each community.
“I want to develop Osun Central. I want to use Osun Central as a template that will show what I would have done were I to be in the executive,” he said.
Adegoke further pledged to cooperate with political opponents and other lawmakers where necessary, stressing that elected representatives must approach public office with humility and focus on improving the lives of their constituents.
