2027: Another Tinubu Minister Quits

By George Omagbemi Sylvester

Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, has officially resigned from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet, becoming the latest top government official to step aside as political calculations ahead of the 2027 general election intensify. Reports also indicate that Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, is preparing to leave his position to pursue the Bauchi State governorship race.

Sununu’s resignation became public on Monday, March 30, 2026, while the wave of exits follows President Tinubu’s directive that all political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 must resign on or before March 31, 2026, in line with the Electoral Act, 2026. Sununu, a former federal lawmaker from Kebbi State, is widely believed to be repositioning for a fresh political contest, while Tuggar is reportedly heading back to Bauchi politics.

This is no longer routine resignation; it is early succession warfare. Tinubu’s cabinet is beginning to feel the pressure of ambition, and every resignation now doubles as a warning that 2027 has already started inside government.
