Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has declared himself the leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, insisting that he has not seen any player better than him during the year under review.
The France captain is among the 30 nominees shortlisted for the award alongside several top stars, including Rodri, Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Mbappe said he is confident of emerging as the winner when the award is presented on October 26.
“I have a feeling that I can win it this year. It is one of my goals, and there is not much time left,” Mbappe told L’Équipe.
The 27-year-old said the Ballon d’Or should recognise an outstanding individual despite football being a team sport.
“I have always believed that the Ballon d’Or should be given to a truly exceptional player.
“Of course there is a collective aspect because football is a team sport, but in the end it is an individual award.
“For years, I have considered myself the best player in the world. I have not seen any player better than me.”
Mbappe’s comments come as the competition for this year’s award intensifies, with several established stars and emerging talents included on the final 30-man shortlist.
