A youth leader in Plateau State, Pam Fom, has reportedly been shot by suspected gunmen less than 24 hours after publicly condemning the killing of two youths in his community.
Fom, who heads the Dorowa Babuje Youth Council in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, was reportedly attacked on Wednesday while travelling to a neighbouring community.
The incident was disclosed by conflict reporter Masara Kim Usman, who said he had interviewed the youth leader a day earlier following the deadly attack on Dorowa Babuje community.
According to Usman, the same armed men accused of carrying out the earlier attack allegedly targeted Fom after the interview.
“I spoke with him yesterday after two young men from his community were killed, and today he was shot,” the journalist wrote in a post on Facebook.
Before the attack, Fom had recounted how suspected gunmen allegedly ambushed two youths riding a motorcycle before advancing to a nearby mining site, where several workers reportedly sustained gunshot injuries.
He also appealed to the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect residents, warning that continued attacks could force locals to resort to self-defence.
Another community leader, Titus Badung, confirmed the incident, describing the attack on Fom as disturbing.
According to Badung, the youth leader was attacked barely a day after granting an interview in which he lamented the worsening insecurity in the area and mourned the killing of two members of his community.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command and other security agencies had not issued any official statement on the incident.
