What should have been a night of jubilation for Ghanaian football fans ended in heartbreak after a young lawyer reportedly died moments after celebrating the Black Stars’ opening victory at the FIFA World Cup.
Sara Araba Tettey, a 26-year-old private legal practitioner who had recently been called to the Bar, is said to have suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after Ghana’s victory over Panama on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.
According to MyJoyOnline, Tettey had joined friends to watch the highly anticipated match at Standard Hostel, a private student residence in Bomso, near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus in Kumasi.
Witnesses said the atmosphere erupted in celebration after the Black Stars secured the crucial win. However, amid the excitement, Tettey suddenly became unresponsive, leaving friends and fellow supporters shocked and distressed.
She was immediately rushed to KNUST Hospital, where medical personnel made extensive efforts to save her life. Sources told the news outlet that doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes in a desperate attempt to revive her.
Despite their efforts, she was later pronounced dead.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over what had been a memorable evening for Ghanaian football supporters, with many expressing grief over the loss of a promising young professional whose legal career was only just beginning.
Her body has reportedly been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy and further funeral arrangements.
