Ghana’s preparations for their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup have reportedly suffered a major setback following reports that midfielder was denied entry into Canada, ruling him out of the Black Stars’ first group-stage clash against in Toronto.
According to multiple reports, the 32-year-old midfielder was unable to secure clearance from Canadian immigration authorities despite being expected to travel with the Ghanaian squad from their training base in Boston.
Neither Ghana’s football authorities nor tournament organizers have publicly disclosed the specific reasons behind the reported visa denial. Canadian authorities have also not issued an official statement on the matter.
Responding to the development, FIFA reportedly emphasized that immigration and visa matters remain the sole responsibility of host nations and fall outside the governing body’s jurisdiction.
Partey’s absence is expected to have significant implications for Ghana’s midfield structure. The experienced midfielder has long been regarded as a key figure in the team’s tactical setup, providing defensive cover, ball distribution, and leadership in crucial matches.
Coaching staff are now expected to make last-minute adjustments ahead of the opening fixture, with several midfield options being considered to fill the void left by the former Ghana captain.
The situation has attracted additional attention due to ongoing legal proceedings involving the player in the United Kingdom. Partey has denied multiple criminal allegations made against him and has not been convicted of any offence. Legal proceedings are expected to continue in the coming months.
