Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on Nigerians to show respect to former President Goodluck Jonathan amid growing speculation about a possible return to presidential politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on the increasing calls by some political groups urging Jonathan to contest again, Wike stressed that the former president has earned a place in Nigeria’s democratic history and should not be dragged into unnecessary political controversies. According to him, Jonathan remains one of the few African leaders who peacefully transferred power after losing an election, an action that strengthened Nigeria’s democratic credentials.
Wike noted that while every Nigerian has the constitutional right to seek elective office, discussions surrounding Jonathan’s political future should be conducted with dignity and respect.
He cautioned against using the former president’s name as a tool for political speculation or division.
The comments come as political alignments and coalition talks continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Although Jonathan has not publicly declared any intention to run, his name frequently surfaces in national conversations due to his political experience and perceived moderate leadership style.
Political analysts believe Wike’s remarks reflect broader concerns about maintaining respect for former national leaders while allowing democratic debate to flourish. As the 2027 race gradually takes shape, the role of influential political figures such as Jonathan is expected to remain a subject of significant public interest.
