Whatsapp Drops Support For Android Versions Below 6.0

By Opeyemi Adelakun

WhatsApp has clarified the Android system requirements for using its messaging service, warning that devices running older operating systems are no longer supported.

The platform currently requires Android 6.0 or a newer version. Phones must also be able to receive SMS messages or phone calls, which are used to verify WhatsApp accounts.

The company regularly phases out support for older operating systems as technology and security requirements evolve.

It says this allows it to concentrate on maintaining the app’s security and functionality on supported devices.
WhatsApp said users whose phones or operating systems are no longer supported would be notified.

Affected users may also receive several reminders to upgrade their devices to continue using the service.
The platform added that it would update its support information as its requirements change.

Android users can check their phone’s operating system version in the device settings to determine whether it meets WhatsApp’s current requirements.
