Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has clarified the role of U.S. troops deployed in the country, insisting that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain fully in command of all operations. His remarks aim to quell public concerns over foreign military involvement in Nigeria’s security affairs.
Speaking at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, March 5, 2026, during the inaugural Monthly Operational Briefing, Musa explained that the United States’ military presence is limited to training, advisory, and surveillance support. He emphasised that Nigerian forces retain full operational authority and make all tactical decisions.
The Defence Minister highlighted ongoing cooperation with AFRICOM as part of broader efforts to combat insurgency, terrorism, and banditry across the country. He praised the Nigerian military’s professionalism and urged service chiefs to continue strategic planning and collaboration while maintaining sovereignty in operations.
Analysts note that Musa’s statement reassures Nigerians that foreign support does not undermine national command, reinforcing public confidence in domestic security management and the government’s commitment to maintaining Nigeria’s sovereignty while benefiting from international expertise.
