The UK government has updated its immigration rules to allow recognised victims of modern slavery on Skilled Worker visas to leave exploitative employers and work elsewhere without jeopardising their immigration status. The Home Office announced the change on 3 September 2026, aiming to prevent victims from being trapped in abusive working conditions due to their visa status. The measure is intended to encourage earlier reporting of exploitation and protect vulnerable workers from those who might weaponise the sponsorship system.
Regarding the eligibility for this change, the exemption applies specifically to Skilled Worker visa holders who have been identified as victims of modern slavery by Home Office Competent Authorities. Under the new flexibility, these qualifying individuals are now permitted to work for any employer for the remainder of their existing immigration permission. This provision, which is outlined in the Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules: HC 584, took effect immediately on 3 September 2026.
Previously, Skilled Worker visa holders were restricted to working only in the specific, sponsored job for which their visa was granted. This new rule removes that restriction for recognised victims, ensuring they are not tethered to abusive employers to maintain their legal residency.
