UN Women, the gender-focused agency of the United Nations, has issued a grave warning that at least 620,000 women and girls have been displaced by the ongoing conflict in Lebanon, exposing them to worsening inequality, economic hardship, and severe protection risks. UN Women Lebanon United Nations

The disclosure was made on Monday, March 30, 2026, with UN Women’s Lebanon representative, Gielan El Messiri, stressing that women and girls now make up more than half of the displaced population, cutting across Lebanese citizens, refugees, and migrant communities.

Why this matters is deeply troubling: the crisis is not just about displacement, but about systemic vulnerability. According to UN Women, the conflict has intensified pre-existing inequalities, leaving many women with limited access to income, weak legal protections, and collapsing social services.

Even more alarming, about 85% of displaced women and girls are living outside formal shelters, often in overcrowded and unsafe conditions in areas like Beirut and Mount Lebanon, significantly increasing exposure to exploitation, abuse, and gender-based violence.

This is not just a humanitarian crisis; it is a gender crisis unfolding at scale, where survival itself has become a daily battle.
