The Minister of Works, David Umahi, is expected to inspect the Benin–Asaba Road on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following growing complaints over the deteriorating condition of the major highway and severe traffic congestion affecting motorists and travellers.
Umahi announced the planned inspection during the flag-off of the Ibadan–Ijebu-Ode Road dualisation project, saying he would meet with independent engineers, the concessionaire handling the project, relevant officials and the Edo State Government to seek an urgent solution.
The Benin–Agbor corridor has reportedly become increasingly difficult to navigate, with deep potholes, failed sections and prolonged gridlock leaving motorists stranded for hours. Recent reports indicate that some travellers have spent extended periods in their vehicles as traffic backed up along the route.
Umahi attributed the current difficulties partly to the Federal Government’s attempt to involve the private sector in road development through concession arrangements. He alleged that the concessionaire had removed more than 30 kilometres of asphalt without completing the expected rehabilitation work.
The minister said the planned inspection would provide an opportunity for the government to engage the concessionaire and other stakeholders and determine how to address the situation.
The 125-kilometre Benin–Asaba section is under a long-term concession arrangement, which the Works Ministry says imposes contractual obligations on the parties involved.
The worsening road condition has also triggered protests and growing concerns from motorists, businesses and residents across Edo and Delta states.
