Authorities in Kano State have detained two teenagers for allegedly planning a “gay” birthday party to coincide with this year’s Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
The Kano State Hisbah Board confirmed the arrests in a statement on Tuesday, 10 March 2026. The teenagers, Umar Yahaya (19) and Musa Al-Hassan (18), are said to have used social media to invite individuals they referred to as pimps from across Nigeria to a birthday gathering scheduled to take place after the Eid prayers.
According to the Deputy Commandant General of the board, Mujahideen Aminudeen, the suspects identified themselves as members of the Yan Daudu group and allegedly planned festivities that included dancing and other activities described by the board as immoral.
Aminudeen noted that the teenagers had expressed remorse and apologised for their actions. Rather than pursuing immediate prosecution, the board decided to keep them under supervision, offering guidance and religious education to prevent future incidents.
The Hisbah official also said personnel would be deployed to monitor mosques and public spaces during the final days of Ramadan, following complaints that some attendees of late-night prayers were engaging in inappropriate conduct.
The case underscores the sensitive balance between youth culture, social media influence, and local religious norms in northern Nigeria, highlighting the approach of authorities to manage such incidents through guidance and oversight rather than immediate punitive measures.
