The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the arrest of two candidates and a parent over the alleged falsification of results from the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) using artificial intelligence and other electronic tools.
The arrests were disclosed on Friday as the examination body released the results of 632,788 candidates who sat for the test on Thursday, 16 April.
In a statement, JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said the suspects were taken into custody for manipulating official SMS result notifications in a bid to alter scores and mislead others, including parents and guardians.
He described the act as a serious offence and warned that the board would take firm action against anyone found engaging in such practices.
“We have two candidates and one parent currently in custody for result falsification using AI and other electronic means,” the statement said.
JAMB also cautioned candidates against tampering with result messages sent through its official SMS channels, noting that such actions could have legal consequences.
For candidates who sat the examination on Thursday, results can be checked by sending “UTMERESULT” via SMS to 55019 or 66019, using the phone number linked to their registration. The board added that the printing of official result slips will be made available at a later date.
The 2026 UTME commenced on 16 April and is scheduled to run until 22 April at centres across the country. JAMB stated that results will continue to be released in batches as the examination progresses.
