US President Donald Trump has dispatched his top negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to Russia and Ukraine as Washington intensifies efforts to end the more than four-year war.
Trump announced on Friday that the two envoys would travel to Moscow and Kyiv with a proposal aimed at breaking the diplomatic deadlock and advancing negotiations to end the conflict.
A senior Ukrainian official said Witkoff and Kushner are expected to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday.
According to US outlet Axios, the envoys are scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday before travelling to Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday.
The Kremlin has not commented on the reported meetings.
Trump said the envoys would determine whether there was a realistic opportunity to move the peace process forward.
“I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two great negotiators. They’ve done a great job, and we sent them over to see whether or not we can get something done,” Trump told reporters.
“They’re bringing with them a proposal to end the war,” he added.
The US President did not disclose whether the proposal would involve Ukraine ceding territory to Russia, an option he has previously suggested.
Trump, however, said Washington had developed a possible route towards ending the conflict.
“We have an idea for peace,” he said.
The planned Kyiv visit would be Witkoff and Kushner’s first since Trump returned to the White House last year after promising to bring the Russia-Ukraine war to an end.
Both men have been involved in previous US diplomatic initiatives, including negotiations surrounding ceasefires in Gaza and Iran.
Witkoff has also travelled to Moscow several times as part of Washington’s earlier efforts to revive peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
