US President Donald J. Trump has renewed calls for Iran to hand over its stockpile of enriched uranium, saying the material should either be brought to the United States for destruction or neutralized in coordination with Iranian authorities.
In a tweet posted late on 25 May, Trump wrote:
“The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event.”
The statement underscores ongoing tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, which has long been a flashpoint in US-Iran relations.
Iran currently possesses enriched uranium that is near weapons-grade levels, raising concerns among global powers about the potential for nuclear weapon development.
Trump’s call comes amid reports of ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran over a possible ceasefire and wider nuclear deal.
While Iranian officials have acknowledged progress on certain points, they maintain that a comprehensive agreement has not yet been reached.
Analysts say Trump’s insistence on immediate transfer or destruction of uranium reflects a continued US priority to prevent Iran from advancing toward weapons-grade enrichment.
The process would involve strict monitoring by the US Atomic Energy Commission or a comparable authority to ensure compliance.
The former president also emphasized that the approach should be handled “in conjunction and coordination” with Tehran, suggesting that diplomacy remains central to resolving the issue without escalating military tensions.
As negotiations continue in Doha and other international venues, global observers remain focused on whether Iran will agree to the transfer or destruction of its uranium, a move that could be pivotal in reducing nuclear proliferation risks in the region.
