Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have rescued 27 kidnapped persons and thwarted fresh abduction attempts during coordinated security operations across Sokoto and Zamfara states.

The operations, carried out between July 20 and 21, also disrupted activities of armed groups in several communities and along the busy Gummi–Sokoto highway.

The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to him, troops deployed at the Forward Operating Bases in Shagari and Sifawa acted on credible intelligence and moved against suspected terrorists operating in Wanke and Kaura communities in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The troops reportedly engaged the attackers in Kaura community, forcing them to retreat under sustained military fire.

“Troops made contact with the terrorists in Kaura community and engaged them with superior firepower, compelling the criminals to flee in disarray,” Danja said.

The operation led to the rescue of six abducted persons, while rustled livestock and two motorcycles were recovered.

In another operation, troops stationed in Gandi, working alongside operatives of the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps, rescued 10 victims who had escaped from captivity.

The victims, including women and children, were discovered in a forest near Badanma community in Rabah Local Government Area before being handed over to local leaders and reunited with their families.

On July 21, troops of Combat Team 12 responded to a distress call after armed men reportedly blocked the Gummi–Sokoto highway in an attempt to abduct travellers.

The soldiers engaged the assailants and pursued them, rescuing 11 victims and recovering a motorcycle.

Danja commended the troops for their prompt response and professionalism during the operations.

“The Theatre Command commends the troops for their vigilance, professionalism and swift response in securing the safe rescue of the victims,” he said.

He also called on residents to sustain cooperation with security agencies through the provision of credible information.

“We appreciate members of the public for their sustained support and prompt provision of credible information, and urge citizens to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with security agencies as ongoing operations progressively degrade terrorist and criminal networks across the theatre,” he added.
