Scientists Develop Experimental Drug That May Slow Aggressive Prostate Cancer

Researchers at Umeå University in Sweden, in collaboration with partner institutions, have developed an experimental drug that could significantly slow the progression of aggressive prostate cancer and help prevent the disease from spreading to other parts of the body.

The findings, published in the scientific journal Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy, suggest the treatment could offer a promising new strategy for tackling metastatic prostate cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease.

Leading the research, Professor Maréne Landström of the Department of Medical Biosciences at Umeå University said the team identified key biological mechanisms responsible for cancer cell growth, invasion and metastasis, paving the way for the development of the new therapy.

According to the researchers, the experimental treatment is a fully human antibody engineered entirely from human proteins, a design that could make it more suitable for future clinical use while potentially reducing unwanted side effects.

Preclinical studies showed that the antibody successfully slowed tumour growth and prevented the spread of aggressive prostate cancer cells. The scientists said the treatment works through a newly discovered biological pathway, which may improve its effectiveness compared with existing approaches.

Despite the encouraging results, Landström cautioned that the drug remains in the experimental stage and must undergo further safety evaluations and regulatory review before it can become available to patients.

She expressed optimism that the project could eventually improve survival rates and quality of life for men diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, describing the findings as an important milestone in cancer research.

The research team also plans to investigate whether the same treatment strategy can be applied to other forms of solid tumours, potentially expanding its benefits beyond prostate cancer.

The study involved experts from the SciLifeLab Drug Discovery and Development Platform, while the project received additional support from the Umeå Biotech Incubator. Funding for the drug’s development and testing was provided by MetaCurUm Biotech AB, a biotechnology company based in Umeå.

If future studies confirm its safety and effectiveness, the experimental therapy could represent a significant breakthrough in the fight against aggressive prostate cancer, offering new hope to patients with advanced stages of the disease.
