President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged state governors across the country to prioritise the construction and rehabilitation of roads and other security-critical infrastructure instead of embarking on what he described as “white elephant projects”, including unnecessary flyovers. The President gave the advice on Thursday, July 30, 2026, while addressing stakeholders during an event in Oyo State.
Tinubu said improved road networks remain essential to boosting economic activities, enhancing connectivity between communities and tackling insecurity. He maintained that governors should channel the increased revenues accruing to states into projects that directly improve the lives of citizens rather than expensive infrastructure with limited economic impact.
The President also reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating insecurity, insisting that the Federal Government would not negotiate with criminals or pay ransom to kidnappers.
He explained that investments in quality road infrastructure, alongside enhanced security operations, would improve access to rural communities, stimulate commerce and strengthen national development.
Tinubu further encouraged state governments to focus on practical, people-oriented projects capable of generating long-term economic benefits, stressing that infrastructure planning should be guided by public need, value for money and sustainable development.
According to him, strategic investments in roads, education, healthcare and agriculture would deliver greater dividends than prestige projects that offer little direct benefit to the people.
