President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima have called on Nigerians to embrace unity, tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and shared sacrifice as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to intensify across the country. The appeal formed part of their Eid-el-Kabir messages delivered during prayers and public engagements marking the Islamic celebration.
Speaking after Eid prayers in Lagos, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to reject ethnic hatred, discrimination, and division, stressing that national unity must rise above political and religious differences.
He described Eid-el-Kabir as a reminder of obedience, sacrifice, compassion, and love for humanity, while also urging citizens to remain law-abiding and peaceful.
Vice President Shettima similarly appealed for collective sacrifice and national understanding, warning that sustainable development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of mistrust and division.
He encouraged Nigerians to focus on common national interests rather than political, ethnic, or religious sentiments as the country moves closer to another election cycle.
The statements come amid rising political realignments, coalition discussions, and growing tension within major political parties ahead of the 2027 elections, with analysts warning against inflammatory rhetoric capable of deepening national divisions.
