President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally written to the Nigerian Senate requesting the screening and confirmation of renowned economist Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, signaling a fresh push by the administration to consolidate ongoing fiscal and tax reforms in Africa’s largest economy.
The request was read during plenary in the Senate Chamber at the National Assembly in Abuja by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, after the presidency transmitted the nomination letter for legislative consideration on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
Taiwo Oyedele, an economist and public policy expert, currently chairs the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, a body that has been central to redesigning Nigeria’s tax structure. His nomination follows a cabinet reshuffle that redeployed the former Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, to the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
The nomination is widely interpreted as part of President Tinubu’s strategy to strengthen revenue generation and stabilize Nigeria’s fragile economy. Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio remains among the lowest globally, forcing the government to rely heavily on borrowing to finance public expenditure.
If confirmed by the Senate, Oyedele will be expected to drive the implementation of sweeping tax reforms aimed at simplifying Nigeria’s complex system of multiple taxes, improving the ease of doing business, and boosting government revenue.
