Tinubu Pushing Nigeria Toward ‘Inevitable Revolution – Sowore

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has warned that Nigeria is approaching a critical tipping point, insisting that the country may be heading toward an inevitable revolution under the current administration.

Sowore made the remarks on Thursday while speaking at the 5th anniversary lecture in honour of late activist Comrade Yinka Odumakin, held at the Airport Hotel in Lagos.

The event, themed “Can Nigeria’s Democracy Work Without Restructuring?”, brought together civil society leaders, activists, and political stakeholders.

In a reflective address, Sowore questioned the appropriateness of describing the gathering as a goodwill event, noting that it marked the remembrance of a fallen comrade.

“We’re supposed to give a goodwill message, but it’s difficult at a moment like this,” he said, describing the anniversary as a solemn occasion for those who knew Odumakin.

He also reflected on life and mortality, expressing a philosophical view that human existence ultimately returns to the universe. However, he shifted focus to Nigeria’s political trajectory, warning that the country’s current conditions point toward a looming upheaval.

“A proud man is on a highway driving you to a revolution, but you still haven’t gotten the message yet,” Sowore said. “This country cannot escape a revolution at this time.”

He added that whether or not he witnesses such an outcome, the signs are already evident.

In a direct reference to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Sowore argued that the current leadership and political environment reflect deeper systemic issues that could trigger widespread unrest.

According to him, a nation marked by deep inequalities, perceived governance failures, and public frustration risks sliding into instability if urgent reforms are not undertaken.

Sowore concluded by urging Nigerians to recognise the urgency of the situation and take responsibility for shaping the country’s future.

“We have deceived ourselves long enough. We have reached that point,” he said.
