Spokesman for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of practising what he described as “voodoo economics.”
Okonkwo also urged Nigerians to be cautious about economic figures and claims coming from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Okonkwo argued that the country’s economic situation did not reflect claims of declining inflation.
“Nigerians, what I am telling you is that whatever comes out of APC, don’t believe it. The more you look, the less you see. Inflation is not coming down at all,” he said.
According to him, rising fuel and transportation costs contradict the reported decline in inflation.
“Inflation is about 35 percent. Fuel prices went up from N1,100 to N1,500, and inflation is coming down. What kind of voodoo economics is that when you know that transport is at the root of everything?” he asked.
Okonkwo further accused the administration of manipulating economic figures to present a better picture of the economy.
“The worst thing that this government is doing is not only that they are not performing; they are now writing figures to cover it,” he alleged.
He also questioned what he described as the frequent attribution of economic developments to Tinubu and the APC.
“Must everything about Tinubu and APC be written? Must it be technically glitched, even the economy?” Okonkwo asked.
The ADC chieftain has previously criticised the administration’s handling of inflation, fuel prices and subsidy reforms, arguing that rising prices of essential goods and transportation costs do not reflect an improvement in Nigerians’ living conditions.
His latest remarks come as economic performance and the impact of the Federal Government’s reforms remain subjects of political debate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
