President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Government to release all approved funds due to Nigeria’s regional development commissions, warning that the commissions must have the financial backing required to deliver meaningful development across the country.
The President gave the directive on Monday, September 14, 2026, through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who represented him at the North Central Development Commission Summit.
The summit, themed “The Great Leap Forward: A 20-Year Economic Infrastructure and Social Development Plan for the North Central Region,” focused on accelerating infrastructure, economic growth and social development in the region.
Akume said the establishment of regional development commissions was part of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at unlocking the economic and industrial potential of different parts of Nigeria.
Tinubu directed the SGF to ensure that funds accruable to the commissions are released as and when due, stressing the importance of giving the institutions the resources required to execute their mandates.
The directive is expected to strengthen the operations of the North Central Development Commission and other regional commissions established to address infrastructure deficits and promote development across their respective regions.
The development also comes amid growing demands for balanced regional development, particularly in areas facing significant infrastructure and economic challenges.
