The British High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has arrived in Abuja to assume his new diplomatic assignment.
Vowles succeeds Richard Montgomery, who previously served as the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.
His arrival was announced in a statement by the Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission, Atinuke Akande-Alegbe.
Speaking on his arrival, Vowles said he was excited to be in Nigeria, adding that his immediate priority was to listen, learn and understand the country and its people.
He said the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom was built largely on strong people-to-people ties, expressing his readiness to work with partners across the country to strengthen bilateral relations.
Vowles was announced as the UK’s next High Commissioner to Nigeria in June 2026.
Before his new appointment, he served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe and held several senior positions at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
He had also served as Britain’s Ambassador to Myanmar, with diplomatic and development postings in Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya.
His assumption of office comes as Nigeria and the UK continue to maintain strong diplomatic, economic, security and development ties.
