President Bola Tinubu has mourned veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs, praising his decades of service to Nigeria’s entertainment industry and his contribution to projecting the country’s culture on the global stage.
Jacobs, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated actors and film executives, died at the age of 84 on Wednesday.
In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Jacobs as an influential figure whose career in theatre, television and film left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s creative industry.
The President said Jacobs’ work contributed to shaping Nigeria’s cultural identity and international image, while his professionalism and dedication inspired generations of actors and filmmakers.
Tinubu recalled that Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before building a career in British television and international film productions.
He later returned to Nigeria, where he became a prominent figure in the country’s developing film industry and contributed to its growth through his acting and leadership.
According to Tinubu, Jacobs distinguished himself through performances that brought depth, dignity and authenticity to his roles, earning him admiration in Nigeria and beyond.
“His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts,” the President said.
Tinubu added that Jacobs’ remarkable body of work would continue to inspire future generations.
The President also recognised the broader contribution of Nigerian creative professionals to the country’s cultural identity, global image and economic development, noting that Jacobs played an important role in that journey.
Throughout his career, Jacobs received several industry honours and was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
Tinubu extended his condolences to Jacobs’ family, particularly his wife, veteran actress Chief Joke Silva, their children and other relatives, as well as his colleagues and members of Nigeria’s creative community.
He prayed for the repose of the late actor’s soul.
