President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a ₦17 billion community-based development fund aimed at driving grassroots projects across Nigeria’s 8,804 political wards.
The approval was announced on April 22, 2026, in Abuja, as part of efforts to deepen local participation in development and improve socio-economic outcomes at the community level.
According to details released by government officials, the initiative (structured as a Community-Based National Social Action Fund) will support locally identified projects in each ward, with implementation handled through verified community organisations.
Authorities stated that the programme is designed to decentralise development by allowing communities to determine their most urgent needs, ranging from basic infrastructure to social services.
A dedicated task force is expected to oversee implementation, monitoring, and accountability nationwide.
The funding will be drawn from a ring-fenced intervention account managed by federal authorities, with a project timeline running through 2026.
The initiative signals a shift toward bottom-up governance, where development is driven at the ward level rather than centrally imposed. However, its success will depend heavily on transparency, local accountability, and effective monitoring to ensure funds translate into tangible community impact rather than administrative leakage.
