President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, as the Acting Inspector-General of Police following the resignation of Mr. Kayode Egbetokun.
The appointment took effect immediately and was announced on Tuesday after the President accepted Egbetokun’s resignation, which he attributed to urgent family matters.
In a statement from the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the President expressed deep gratitude for the outgoing police chief’s years of dedicated service to the nation and the Nigeria Police Force.
He praised Egbetokun for his commitment, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to enhancing the country’s internal security framework.
Egbetokun, who was appointed Inspector-General in June 2023, was serving a four-year term set to conclude in June 2027, as per the revised provisions of the Police Act.
The presidency noted that his tenure focused on improving operational capacity and the overall effectiveness of policing across the country.
In announcing Disu’s appointment, President Tinubu stated that the decision was made in light of the ongoing security challenges facing the nation and in accordance with relevant laws and legal guidelines.
The President expressed confidence that Disu’s experience, operational knowledge, and proven leadership abilities would provide stable and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period.
As mandated by the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally review Disu’s appointment as the permanent Inspector-General of Police.
Following the council’s discussions, his nomination will be sent to the Senate for confirmation.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving national security, strengthening institutional capabilities, and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to fulfill its constitutional duties.
