Brazilian forward Neymar has paid tribute to Lionel Messi ahead of the Argentine superstar’s final appearance for his country.

Messi is expected to play his last match for Argentina against Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, bringing an illustrious international career closer to its conclusion.

Neymar, who played alongside Messi at Barcelona between 2013 and 2017 and later at Paris Saint-Germain from 2021 to 2023, joined the wave of tributes with an emotional message on Instagram.

The Brazilian said Messi’s influence on football extended far beyond Argentina, expressing gratitude for the memories they created both as teammates and opponents.

“Everyone who loves football has enjoyed your talent over the years. Today will be your last match in the shirt of your national team, your country, and I hope you enjoy every moment, and that all the words of appreciation offered to you today bring you joy,” Neymar wrote.

He added: “It is not Argentina alone that thanks you, but the entire world thanks you for everything you have given to football.”

Reflecting on their relationship, Neymar said Messi had deepened his own love for the game and described their time together as an honour.

“Thank you for making me love football even more. It was an honour for me to play against you, and most importantly, to make history with you. Thank you, Lionel Messi,” he wrote.

Messi, 39, leaves behind a decorated international career with Argentina, having won the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His achievements with the national team helped end years of disappointment and cemented his status as one of Argentina’s most accomplished footballers.
