The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the ₦15.8tn reportedly saved from fuel subsidy removal and the more than $100bn borrowed by his administration.
Obi’s call came a day after Tinubu criticised him at an All Progressives Congress campaign rally in Akwa Ibom State, saying that while the former Anambra State governor fled erosion in Anambra, he confronted the Atlantic Ocean in Lagos.
In a post on X on Saturday, Obi congratulated Tinubu on spending a night in a Nigerian state outside Lagos and Abuja. He urged the President to visit other parts of the country and explain how his administration had used the resources available to it.
Obi also referenced increased government revenue from taxes and additional income which the administration reportedly said exceeded its target last year.
He said Nigerians deserved to know how many people had been lifted out of poverty, how many out-of-school children had returned to school and how many functional primary healthcare centres had been built.
The former Anambra governor also demanded explanations on improvements in electricity supply, particularly in view of Tinubu’s earlier promise to address the power challenge.
He further questioned the administration’s efforts to improve national security, noting that Nigeria remained among the countries most affected by terrorism.
“Mr President, Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government,” Obi said.
He added that the new Nigeria he hoped to build would be founded on accountability, transparency and measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.
