Fresh political drama has erupted following Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s criticism of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, with Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in the House of Representatives, delivering a detailed rebuttal that has intensified public debate.
The controversy began after Oshiomhole questioned Obi’s competence to address Nigeria’s security challenges, alleging that insecurity worsened during Obi’s tenure as Governor of Anambra State.
He also linked the activities of the Bakassi Boys to Obi’s administration, suggesting that the former governor lacked the leadership credentials required to govern Nigeria. These remarks quickly attracted widespread reactions across political circles.
Responding, Hon. Ogene accused the former Edo State governor of distorting historical facts for political gain. He maintained that available security records contradict Oshiomhole’s claims, arguing that Anambra witnessed significant improvements in security under Obi’s administration. Ogene further clarified that the Bakassi Boys were established before Obi assumed office and therefore could not reasonably be attributed to his government.
The lawmaker urged political leaders to base public discourse on verifiable facts rather than partisan narratives, warning that misinformation undermines democratic accountability and informed public debate.
Political observers say the exchange reflects the growing intensity of Nigeria’s political landscape as major actors position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With both the ruling and opposition camps increasingly engaging in public confrontations, analysts believe debates over past governance records will remain central to the country’s evolving political discourse.
