In a celebration of academic excellence and youth empowerment, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday officially handed over the reins of power to Miss Etiyemonu Esther, the overall winner of the 21st Lagos Spelling Bee Competition. The talented student assumed the role of One-Day Governor during a ceremony at Lagos House, Marina.

Esther, a student of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, earned the prestigious honour after clinching the top spot in the fiercely contested spelling bee competition in December 2025. The symbolic handover was captured in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user Riddwane, showing Governor Sanwo-Olu formally ceding his seat to the young spelling champion for the day.

Announcing the event on his official X account, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his delight in hosting the young leader.

“Today, I received Miss Etiyemonu Esther, the One Day Governor and overall winner of the 21st Lagos Spelling Bee Competition, a brilliant student of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, at Lagos House, Marina,” the Governor stated.

He showered praise on Esther’s remarkable character and intellect, noting, “Her confidence, focus, and hard work stand out. She represents the very best of our youth, and I am incredibly proud of her achievements.”

The Governor also extended the support of the entire state to the young scholar, adding, “Esther, all of Lagos is rooting for you and your bright future. Congratulations once again.”

Esther was not alone in her symbolic tenure. She was accompanied by her fellow executive council members for the day: the One-Day Deputy Governor, Miss Awoyemi Dorcas, and the One-Day Secretary to the State Government, Miss Salami Jumai Olaide. The three students were joined by their proud parents for the occasion.

During the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu took a moment to commend the visionary behind the impactful initiative. He praised the First Lady of the Nation, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, for creating the One-Day Governor programme, describing it as a “long-lasting legacy” that has inspired and produced numerous young leaders in the state over the years.
