Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has officially declared his intention to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, saying the country needs a complete departure from the leadership style of the current political establishment.
Sowore made the announcement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he confirmed that he would participate in the presidential primaries of the African Action Congress (AAC) scheduled for next week.
“I plan to contest the 2027 presidency. We have our primaries next week,” he stated.
The activist-turned-politician criticised Nigeria’s mainstream political class, accusing many prominent figures of contributing to the nation’s worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and poverty.
Responding to questions about why Nigerians should trust his vision ahead of other political leaders such as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi, Sowore argued that the policies and ideas of the country’s traditional political elite were responsible for Nigeria’s current challenges.
According to him, years of poor governance have left Nigerians trapped in “poverty, insecurity, pain, sorrow and tears.”
Sowore maintained that his movement represents a new political direction focused on accountability, governance reform, social justice, and greater inclusion of young people in leadership.
The former AAC presidential flagbearer has consistently presented himself as an alternative to both the ruling party and the mainstream opposition, campaigning on promises of systemic reforms and improved welfare for ordinary Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
