Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that false allegations were once made against him shortly after the current administration came into power, claiming that some individuals attempted to pitch him against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at an event in honour of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, Shettima said unnamed persons from Borno State allegedly informed President Bola Tinubu that he was plotting to eliminate him and take over power.
According to the Vice President, the President dismissed the claims after reviewing the situation, describing the allegations as baseless and inconsistent with reality.
“The president said their story did not add up… I would not have been the candidate, neither were you going to be Vice presidential candidate,” Shettima quoted Tinubu as saying.
He further narrated that the same individuals later pushed a narrative suggesting he intended to use cultural gifts exchanged during the campaign period for sinister purposes—claims he also dismissed as unfounded.
Shettima added that despite the rumours, President Tinubu later publicly wore the outfit in question, demonstrating trust and dismissing the allegations as malicious gossip.
He used the opportunity to urge Nigerians to reject divisive narratives and instead embrace unity, mutual respect, and national cohesion.
According to him, citizens must act as one another’s keepers rather than spread mistrust and political bitterness within the country.
