Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during the bloc’s 69th Ordinary Session held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Sunday, July 19, 2026. He succeeds Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, who completed his tenure as chairman.
Faye assumes the rotating leadership of the 15-member regional bloc at a critical period marked by rising terrorism, political instability, democratic challenges and efforts to rebuild relations with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, which withdrew from ECOWAS.
In his acceptance remarks, the Senegalese leader pledged to strengthen regional cooperation, deepen economic integration and promote peace, security and democratic governance across West Africa.
At 46, Faye becomes one of the youngest leaders to chair ECOWAS. Political observers believe his emergence could inject fresh momentum into ongoing reforms aimed at restoring confidence in the regional organisation while addressing transnational security threats, economic development and institutional credibility.
His election places Senegal at the forefront of regional diplomacy as ECOWAS seeks to reinforce unity and respond to the complex political and security challenges confronting West Africa.
