Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani has come under criticism following a report alleging that she referred to Christians as “Arna,” a Hausa term commonly used to describe non-Muslims or infidels.
The alleged remark has triggered reactions on social media, with some Nigerians condemning the reported comment and calling for clarification from the former APC Adamawa State governorship candidate, who is seeking the governorship again under a different political party.
According to a publication by Adamawa Pulse, Binani allegedly made the comment during a political visit by some of her supporters to her residence. The report said the visit was part of political engagements ahead of the forthcoming 2027 governorship contest.
Amid the controversy, a statement circulated among supporters of Senator Binani warned members against the publication by Adamawa Pulse, saying the matter had been brought to the attention of the appropriate authorities.
The statement directed members of the group to report the Adamawa Pulse Facebook page through the platform’s reporting channels and continue doing so until the matter is “properly addressed” and the account is no longer active.
“Meanwhile, the appropriate authorities are currently reviewing the matter and considering the necessary legal and other lawful measures in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement said.
The development has further intensified debate over the alleged comment, particularly given Nigeria’s religious diversity and the sensitivity surrounding statements perceived to target people on the basis of their faith.
As of the time of filing this report, the full context of the alleged remark, including the circumstances in which the word “Arna” was reportedly used, remained unclear.
The controversy is expected to generate further reactions as the matter is reviewed and any relevant authorities determine whether further action is warranted.
