Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Russia and the United States share a unique responsibility for maintaining global peace and stability, describing the two countries as the world’s largest nuclear powers.
Putin made the remark on Saturday in a congratulatory message to President Donald Trump as the United States celebrated the 250th anniversary of its independence.
The Russian leader said the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence in 1776 marked not only the birth of America but also a defining moment in world history. He recalled Russia’s support for the American colonies during their struggle for independence from Britain.
Highlighting the history of relations between the two nations, Putin said Russia and the United States had stood together during both World Wars, contributing significantly to the defeat of Nazism and helping to shape the modern international order.
He stressed that both countries now carry a special responsibility to preserve international security and strategic stability because of their nuclear capabilities.
According to Putin, building constructive, balanced and mutually beneficial relations between Moscow and Washington would serve the interests of both nations as well as the wider international community.
Also marking the occasion, Britain’s King Charles III praised the long-standing alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States, describing it as one founded on friendship, trust, liberty, the rule of law and respect for human dignity.
The British monarch said both countries have a shared responsibility to make decisions that will strengthen global peace, prosperity and national security for future generations.
