Portugal football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a heartfelt message of support to his long-time football rival, Lionel Messi, following the death of Messi’s father, Jorge Messi.
Messi announced the death in an emotional social media post on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, paying tribute to his father and reflecting on the important role he played throughout his life and illustrious football career. Jorge Messi, 68, was also his son’s longtime agent and a key figure in his journey from Argentina to global football stardom.
Responding to Messi’s emotional tribute, Ronaldo offered his condolences and encouragement, writing: “Huge hug to you and your loved ones in this difficult moment, Leo. Stay strong.”
The touching gesture came despite the pair’s celebrated rivalry, which has defined one of the greatest individual competitions in modern football.
Messi’s tribute also raised questions about his future in football, with the Argentine admitting that his father’s death had left him uncertain about how much longer he would continue playing. However, no retirement decision has been officially announced.
